Hammer of Ooda?

Hello and welcome to Hammer of Ooda – a website dedicated to the practice of cybersecurity. In the currently landscape, it’s still surprising difficult to find cybersecurity resources that address how cybersecurity is actually conducted by practitioners. Therefore, this site will seek to explain cybersecurity in a way that provides practical advice that will provide tangible benefits.

What topics will this blog cover?

This blog will primarily cover cybersecurity topics with the target audience being practitioners (those working in the field) or aspiring practitioners (those looking to work in the field). The approach to topics will focus on how the interact with the actual practice of cybersecurity from my experience. The end goal will be to enable cybersecurity practitioners to improve their personal skills and the processes they use in their work.

This blog will also cover some ancillary topics, including leadership, organization, economics, and some general life topics. This will take the form of personal essays, answers to questions, reactions to other content on the internet. In some extraordinary cases, I may write a post on one of my hobbies.

Who is the author?

My name is Eric Dietz and I’ve been working in cybersecurity for nearly ten years. In that time I’ve served as a SOC analyst, manager of a Log Management and SIEM team, a SOC Manager, and a cybersecurity Incident Manager. In these roles I’ve worked with a number of major security tools (both hands-on experience and management experience), obtained certifications, attended trainings, and read through a number of cybersecurity books and blogs. Despite all this, I still don’t consider myself and expert, but a lifelong learner looking to integrate cybersecurity processes with knowledge from other disciplines.

Prior to working in cybersecurity, I went to law school, obtained my attorney license, and worked for a time as a law clerk. I also am an avid woodworker, working out of my garage every summer (because the winter is too cold). I also love tabletop gaming and the hobby aspects associated with it (painting miniatures, building terrain, etc.). Finally, I’m a father of two beautiful children, which basically uses up 90% of my non-work time.
